HIV-positive patients with major depressive disorder are associated with what?

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with poor virologic outcomes and faster HIV progression. Although persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) HIV RNA is associated with MDD, it is unknown whether MDD is associated with detectable CSF virus when plasma virus is undetectable in persons taking antiretroviral drugs (CSF viral escape). MDD is associated with increased risk for CSF viral escape. Ongoing CSF viral replication may occur in more persons than previously estimated. Careful evaluation and treatment of depression may improve HIV...

Reprogrammed E. coli: A novel circuit to combat hard-to-treat bacterial infections

Hwang et.all. demonstrate a novel genetic circuit that reprograms Escherichia coli to specifically recognize, migrate toward, and eradicate both dispersed and biofilm-encased pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells. The reprogrammed E. coli degraded the mature biofilm matrix and killed the latent cells encapsulated within by expressing and secreting the antimicrobial peptide microcin S and the nuclease DNaseI upon the detection of quorum sensing molecules naturally secreted by P. aeruginosa. Hwang et.all. achieved signifincantly improved killing activity against planktonic and mature biofilm cells...

Epidemiology of Pyrazinamide-Resistant Tuberculosis in the United States, 1999–2009

Background.Pyrazinamide (PZA) is essential in tuberculosis treatment. We describe the prevalence, trends, and predictors of PZA resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in the United States. Methods. We analyzed culture-positive MTBC cases with reported drug susceptibility tests for PZA in 38 jurisdictions routinely testing for PZA susceptibility from 1999 to 2009. National Tuberculosis Genotyping Service data for 2004–2009 were used to distinguish  M. tuberculosis fromMycobacterium bovis and determine phylogenetic lineage. Results.Overall 2.7% (2167/79 321) of MTBC cases had PZA resistance, increasing annually from 2.0% to 3.3%...

Chlamydia most prevalent sexually transmitted infection across Europe; rates of gonorrhoea and syphilis increasing

The report Sexually transmitted infections in Europe 2011 presents EU-wide data on four STI and congenital syphilis from 1990–2011 as reported by countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EU/EEA). The data show that young adults and men having sex with men (MSM) are the key groups involved in the transmission of STI in Europe. Young adults particularly contribute to the case numbers of chlamydia, which can partly be explained by targeted chlamydia testing in this age...
